Hyperdimension Neptunia and its spinoffs have a lot of material that might make people uncomfortable, from skimpy magical girl costumes to scenes where kids get abducted. I personally cringed during Anonydeath's introduction in episode six of the anime, for reasons I discussed in my last entry.

Despite that, the world of Gamindustri has become a haven for me in the last few months. I can go on adventures there with a cast of mostly good-natured female characters, who don't answer to men and aren't trying to seek male approval. They don't have to deal with oppressive societies, either, because they're literal goddesses who each rule a whole country. Sometimes they have to deal with existential threats, but they always manage to overcome them by working together.

Now, that sounds a lot like the premise for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which most people would probably agree is more kid- and female-friendly. But I personally had a lot of trouble watching the pilot episode of that series. There was so much boundary violation and forced friendship, where the characters have to get along no matter what.

tl;dr; I feel like it really shows that "western fantasy" stuff is designed by regressive men who long for the days of bikini armour and Conan, and modern MLP is made for "bronies," while Neptunia's characters were designed by a woman to appeal to herself. Someone please tell me I'm not just being creepy and blind here.

Technology Tell's Jenni Lada tells all:

Finding it passed the Bechdel test was only the start. Hyperdimension Neptunia games offer a pretty positive view of women, once you get past the innuendo and outrageous costumes. It does something that’s practically unthinkable in the world of games, for starters. It features an all-female cast. Neptune and her sister, Nepgear, are always the stars. Their friends and rivals are all women. The only time men show up are as an occasional villain or ancillary character. Male characters often don’t even merit character portraits.

tl;dr I love these stories and characters, I like the all-female cast of incarnate deities, I even like some of the lesbian fanservice, but some of the male fans skeeve me out and I want to find other women / enbies who appreciate these games? Also I've ordered the fake-MMO 4 Goddesses Online and may be playing it online soon.

Via [personal profile] tim, we have two twitter threads where actual boots-on-the-ground antifa talk about their tactics and the need for their tactics. The first one, especially, emphasizes non-violent direct action to intervene in order to protect vulnerable people, while still being ready to commit violence should all else fail.

It's reassuring to know that organized antifa, black bloc, etc. know what they're doing, know how to deescalate, and have very clear goals. It's also important to reiterate that hate speech isn't nonviolent; speech that threatens to hurt other people is violence. It's a form of terrorism, of making people feel unsafe just because of what they look like or who they love. Or other immutable characteristics.

Personal example involving transphobia )

The thing I expressed concern about, before, wasn't that people were saying they'd punch Nazis; Nazis should fear being punched, when they go to advocate for white supremacy and ethnic cleansing in public. It was that a lot of the people I'd seen on Reddit specifically seemed to be advocating for Nazi-punching from a place of toxic masculinity, and wanting to escalate conflicts to the detriment of more vulnerable people than white cismale Reddit users.

I'm very glad to know that people like that aren't in charge, and that vulnerable groups of people are preparing their / our own defences and tactics. I don't think I can participate in the same ways that they can, but I want to make it clear that I support organized antifa, and am not trying to scare or warn people away from the concept of resisting fascists. Goddess knows we need more people doing so.

This quote is from an essay on the Good Men Project website, so it's got the caveat attached that it's by a cisman who is trying hard to be seen as an ally.

I thought this part was worth repeating, though:

Transphobia, and how people project their own fears onto us )

Either way, comparing us to mirrors feels appropriate, especially since you don't choose to become a mirror. You're just stuck in one, whether you like it or not.

Tamamo-no-Mae is perhaps the most famous -- and tragic -- foxwoman in Japanese folklore. Variations on her story have been told and retold, the gist of which is that she was a kitsune (fox) who took on human form and became the Emperor's courtesan. But she was found out by an onmyōji (magician), declared to be the cause of the Emperor's illness, and chased out to the plains of Nasu and killed.

The retelling of her story in Fate/EXTRA, a visual novel / roleplaying game for the PlayStation Portable, is especially stark. In it, she grows up as a human and does not even realize that she is a fox until her ears suddenly sprout from her head. She manages to conceal them for an entire month, before being found out.

Here are some excerpts from the scene where she tells the player character her life story:

Destroy “games.”

Destroy “game stores.”

Destroy “gamers.”

Only play games that they have contempt for, with people that they have contempt for, in spaces where they don’t exist.

If they think you're their friend, if they are comfortable around you, then you are complicit in their acts of violence.

I died when I came out to Yuro, and I died when I came out to my family, and I died when they posted the election results, and I died and I died and I died.

How do I live?

Who will let me?

I'm not planning on dying anytime soon. But I would like to have an AR app, which lets me see the blood on everyone's hands. It's always been there, but there is more than usual lately.

EDIT: I do not think the person who wrote this essay meant to chastise our friends here on Dreamwidth. It looks like a wake up call for the unaware and uncaring.

... or those who can be persuaded to do things that go against their consciences, when their leaders command it. Whether in a church or in service to other ideals.

Posted on Feminist Mormon Housewives:

Um, I think there’s something to be said for mirror neurons being the basis of universal morality. In people with functioning consciences, they make us hurt too when we see others hurting.

Making someone ignore their conscience requires either mental illness, like sociopathy (where you can’t empathize at all), or indoctrination, like Mormonism (where the Other is demonized and you are given reasons to enjoy or ignore their suffering).

The reason Mormonism is becoming increasingly unpopular, these days, is not because people reject morality altogether. It’s because their consciences tell them your church’s teachings are immoral and hurtful.

I personally left, when I realized that. My commitment to kindness and love allowed me to transcend the awful beliefs I was raised with, and see others — and myself — for the valuable people we were. If my life still has fear and pain in it now, it is largely because of people like you, who believe in a sort of moral relativity where an act (like forbidding others to marry) is evil if done against you but blessed if done against someone your god disapproves of.

If you are struggling with matters of conscience as well, I strongly suggest considering that your god may be the one with the problem, and that you ought to find one who doesn’t tell you to hurt people.

Part Two:

Also, being intolerant of intolerance does in fact make sense. Functioning empathy is the basis of solidarity, and community. “If you want to hurt them, you’ll have to go through me first” is only unreasonable if you believe that you have a right to hurt others.

Or if you don’t believe your actions are, in fact, hurtful, in which case you may want to stop and listen to others explain why it is.

Please pray to whatever you worship, that justice will be done. For all of the gender, sexual, religious, and ethnic minorities whose lives are policed by the majority's cruelty, and ended through violence, deprivation, and despair.

After you are finished praying, please find those who are endangered and hurting, and help them. Not by erasing what makes them endangered, but by making it safe for them to be themselves.

My going on living, today, is a political act. Just like it has been every day, for the past few years. I shouldn't have to face the opposition that makes it political. I should just be able to take it for granted.
