To paint three miniatures:

Three female miniatures on Jewelfox's desk, from left to right: A human wizard in green and grey casting a spell out of a book, a human wizard in blue holding a book and a staff, and an elf soldier in green and silver carrying a lit torch. The magic effects and the torch's fire are done in translucent plastic.

But that's partly because we're perfectionist. They say to remember that you're painting an army (or other group) and not a model, and that's useful for when you've got one of those blocks of twenty identical models from Warhammer. But this is for Frostgrave, where you're playing a single wizard and up to nine assistants. So each model counts a bit more.

... also I haven't done painting in awhile, and I take frequent breaks.

Anyway, it's about one model per evening, and I watch [tumblr.com profile] alias-pseudonym play Elder Scrolls Legends or something while painting. The ones on the left and right are going to be a Sigilist (book wizard) and her hired captain, while the one in the middle is going to be a rival mage whose captain I still need to paint.

Also in the works: An all-furry warband, thanks to a miniatures line that I Kickstarted.

Did I mention I like Frostgrave? >_>; It's not as cute as Endless Fantasy Tactics, but it's a very fun pick-up-and-play kind of skirmish game. I feel like it works better than D&D at what D&D itself does, because everyone plays a wizard (thus eliminating power discrepancies between "martials" and "casters") and you're fighting each other to get magic stuff from a ruined city, not murdering people with different skin colours in order to steal all their loot.

SA has been hitting it out of the park lately, with its Onion-esque takes on current events. Check these out if you need to laugh in order to keep from crying!

(Content note: Refers to, and skewers the subjects of, recent depressing news stories that you may not want to be reminded of.)

That's from the comic "Your Black Friend," which Homeworld / Sword of the Stars writer Arinn Dembo reviews on her blog.

I'm reblogging this quote for truth. When I started becoming aware of systemic injustice is when I started being held at even more of a distance. My family and church didn't know what to do with me, and could only tell me to "stop reading those things." Individual people would come up and thank me, sometimes, after I spoke up on others' behalf in Institute, or tried to make sure that someone was okay. But to anyone who had any kind of power or privilege in White Mormon culture, I vanished except as an annoyance.

On the plus side, most White Mormon people are kind of boring anyway, except when their scandals show up in the newspaper. Being around other trans women and "woke" friends has been very good for me.

(About the word "woke:" Arinn notes that it has been appropriated by white people to mean "sensitive and aware," when it was originally used by black people to mean "alert to potential danger." She discusses the need for such a term, in a society that's even more hostile to people with black skin than it is to me personally.)

It's an enchanting game where you explore a wondrous land ... that has monsters coded as "tribal" and "indigenous" in the way they dress and build dwellings.

It gets worse )

Don't get me wrong, Zelda games have always had problematic stuff in them. Like the Gerudo. But like, the main "generic enemies" throughout most of the series, the Moblins, are portrayed as fully-sapient professional soldiers. Sometimes silly ones, as in Wind Waker, but soldiers nonetheless, who are part of an occupying army. And who are moral actors capable of making their own choices, like the ones in the original Legend of Zelda who aid Link in secret.

Is no one else bothered by this? ^^;;;; Because it looks like a gorgeous game, but I really can't get past this, and it seems like no one I follow has even noticed. If they talk about the indigenous-coded monsters at all, it's to say how the game lets you kill them in creative ways.

... on the plus side, it did give us shirtless Link.

Content note: Political violence, physical violence, and why I feel using the latter to combat the former will get us all killed. Or at least, all of us whose bodies are politicized.

tl;dr

If you're an abled white man, we don't need you to punch Nazis for us. The Nazis can and will take out their anger on more vulnerable targets. What we need is for you to pick one of the battles we're waging, and use your power and privilege to shield us. Either give what we need to keep fighting, or find out where the line of fire is and get in the way. In MMO terms, we're cycling DoTs on the raid boss, but we need you to heal, buff, and tank for us.

(MMORPGs are a much better lens to view a group struggle through than solo shooter / adventure games, because anyone who's worked with seventeen other people to clear Dynamis knows what happens when someone refuses to listen, or makes the run all about them.)

Nazis talk tough and collect firearms, but they're fucking cowards. All bullies are. Just look at how scared they are of trans, female, and/or PoC bodies, let alone yours! If you make it clear you oppose them, you don't need to throw punches to get them to back down. Most of the time, all you need to do is tell them to fuck off. Just make sure we're okay, afterwards, and that you listen when we say what we need.

Destroy “games.”

Destroy “game stores.”

Destroy “gamers.”

Only play games that they have contempt for, with people that they have contempt for, in spaces where they don’t exist.

If they think you're their friend, if they are comfortable around you, then you are complicit in their acts of violence.

"Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease."

Those are some pretty powerful lyrics. More, these were political and prophetic lyrics.

Recall that the song and the French poem were written in 1847. The English version was written in 1855, six years before the American Civil War and eight years before the Emancipation Proclamation. O Holy Night, it turns out, was a song of political resistance and protest.

I have a friend whose father was a migrant worker and an associate of Cesar Chavez, who will be remembered at the judgement bar for lifting up the lowest of people, who contribute to our economy in the form of cheap produce.

I have several friends who have been the victims of sexual assault, (it’s that common) and who are triggered to varying degrees by the campaign remarks and actions and final election of a sexual predator.

I know a Syrian refugee family in the first weeks of adjustment to their new life in Arizona who found death threats from an anonymous neighbor, for whom many of us made an effort to encourage them that not all their neighbors would wish them evil.

My friends are devastated that the misogynist, racist, religious bigot candidate squeaked by to be elected, and fearful of newly empowered racists, misogynists, and religious bigots at large. Anyone who wants to tell them they should ‘get over it’ already will have to get through me first. We all know that we must move forward somehow come January 20. Grieving is part of some folks’ preparation. Compassion is a duty too.

I'm not planning on dying anytime soon. But I would like to have an AR app, which lets me see the blood on everyone's hands. It's always been there, but there is more than usual lately.

EDIT: I do not think the person who wrote this essay meant to chastise our friends here on Dreamwidth. It looks like a wake up call for the unaware and uncaring.

Please pray to whatever you worship, that justice will be done. For all of the gender, sexual, religious, and ethnic minorities whose lives are policed by the majority's cruelty, and ended through violence, deprivation, and despair.

After you are finished praying, please find those who are endangered and hurting, and help them. Not by erasing what makes them endangered, but by making it safe for them to be themselves.

My going on living, today, is a political act. Just like it has been every day, for the past few years. I shouldn't have to face the opposition that makes it political. I should just be able to take it for granted.
