Today we and [tumblr.com profile] alias-pseudonym met up with a very old friend of mine at a board game café! (We'll call her 'K' for now.) We met years ago on a Sonic fanfiction site, back when I was a conservative Mormon. Both of us have grown a lot since then, though, and it's always great to see people we knew pre-transition accept our new (and cuter) self. And to meet awesome people in this city that we just moved to.

Also, Above and Below is a really neat game that combines the best parts of cave crawling with village building, worker placement, and excellent art. By the end of it I had Frog and Robo from Chrono Trigger in my party (or at least I decided the frog and robot villagers were them), while K had a guy who looked like Solid Snake. Alias still won, though; it caught on to the actual strategy a lot quicker than we did.

Check out these miniatures!

A photo of Companion Cube, Turret, and test subject miniatures made of low-quality plastic, as used in the Portal board game. Cardboard counters of GLaDOS, a blue portal, and a test chamber are also present.

You can see more photos and read the full writeup on Polygon. I'm just thinking of all the uses for Portal minis now:

  • Give one of our Shas'uis a portal gun

  • Make the companion cube an objective marker

  • Surprise RPG players by changing the "dungeon" into a test chamber

Just imagine teaching someone to play Fate, Dungeon World, or Pathfinder by throwing their character into the Enrichment Centre. ^^ Or using the slices of cake (not pictured above) as victory points in 40k or another game.

... did I mention I am apparently good at impersonating GLaDOS?
