Zelda has been in a peculiar spot for a while, straddling the line between a more adventurey game - like the first where there was veeeeery little plot - vs having more plot over time.

Zelda's kind of its own thing. >_> Its particular combination of swordfighting, and solving rote puzzles by searching your inventory for the item you need to bypass them, is kind of unique to the series. And it's kind of calcified over time, as Tevis Thompson notes in their essay on Saving Zelda (and their graphic novel, Second Quest).

BotW breaks with a lot of conventions, I think, and may in some ways be the game that they're looking for. I just wish Nintendo would grow up on a lot of other things, like how they refuse to let you play as a female Link and they sensationalize "men in women's clothes," on top of making "tribal"-coded societies the enemies.

Maybe if Nintendo grew up, some of their fans would too (feminist-part-of-Reddit link).
