... for all Dreamwidth users!

First, you can use Markdown on Dreamwidth by putting "!markdown" at the start of a post, without the quotation marks! This lets you use Markdown formatting instead of HTML (it's way simpler and less verbose), and automatically link to other DW accounts with an at-sign like on Twitter.

Second, you can upload pictures to Dreamwidth without using email! Just visit https://www.dreamwidth.org/file and click on "Upload Images." The "Image Code" it gives you creates a 100x100 thumbnail, but you can just copy the URL inside of the "a href" part and then put that in an <img> or Markdown image tag. Don't forget to add alt text for accessibility purposes!

Note that DW's hosting seems to choke on anything over 1 MB, so please remember to resize your pic and/or convert it to .jpg. You may also want to put something like this in your journal's custom CSS, to keep pictures from taking over the screen and going outside of your entries:

img { max-width: 100% !important; max-height: 600px; }

There are a handful of other CSS hacks I use as boilerplate for any DW journal. Maybe I ought to post them sometime. :>

Does anyone remember the “Become Your Fursona" stories that I used to work on? [personal profile] aliaspseudonym does, and it’s been posting a lot of sketches and previews and things of its own take on the concept, on its Tumblr.

The upcoming fic, called simply “Transformation Story,” stars Gwen, a girl who lives in a computer-simulated world where things like your species can shift drastically just by modifying your tags / variables. After an episode of data corruption removes her species and phenotype tags, her subconscious ends up rebuilding them … just not in the way that her conscious mind expected.

Like the old Become Your Fursona stories, [personal profile] aliaspseudonym’s work so far has a dark edge, and is a serious take on dysphoria. We’ve been consulting with it on this story, and we really like where it is taking things so far.

You can see more of Alias’ work at its Tumblr (RSS link), or add [syndicated profile] spinecrawlerrush_feed to your Dreamwidth reading page. It cross-posts the story and artwork to its DeviantArt and FurAffinity accounts (less frequently to the FA one).

if I can't tell free stories for people.

I'm going to talk about why I think that is, because it's not because anyone here on Dreamwidth has been a jerk. It appears to be more tied into the kinds of "abusive religion / family" things that we're used to writing about. It just took a visit to a "Mormon Meme Translator," which explains the hidden meanings behind the things we grew up with, to help us see why we are having such trouble with this.

Content note: Brief, nongraphic mention of how we were so depressed as a Mormon that we almost killed ourself, which is not how we're feeling right now, and spoilers for the plot of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

TL;DR

Just read Wundergeek's comic about depression and anxiety. :P And how they make you sabotage yourself.

So, what does this mean for you?

Honestly, I don't think you (meaning anyone reading this) have to do anything. We have to not be so hard on ourself, to be more realistic about what we can do, and to be accepting when bad things happen or we can't do what was expected.

We're pretty sure our readers and players are. We just need to learn it as well, because this perfectionism is a bigger problem than our triggers and lack of spoons are. The latter we can work around or wait to subside, while the former makes us feel like we shouldn't try to begin with.

Having said that, some more hugs and encouragement would be nice. >_> We're sorry we're being so hard on ourself.

So, at night in Sonic Unleashed there are these people with little purple ghosts coming out of them. These people are really depressed. It turns out they are that way because Evil Spirits, and part of the game involves magically curing them.

A Greek ice cream man saying there's no point in making ice cream anymore.

This would make sense, if not for the fact that at the start of the game a mad scientist's superweapon cracks the planet apart.

I think it's the people who aren't hanging their heads in despair who are possessed.

I'm going to try to keep this concise and nontechnical, and explain why I think everyone -- especially people who don't have a lot of time, money, or spoons, and who aren't as interested in fiddling with their smartphones as I am -- should consider a Windows Phone in general, and the one that I got in particular.

Cut for length and for lots of pictures. )

Dreamwidth's support team got back to me about the speciesist language issue. They have decided that it will be resolved by a Trial of Grievance. Using battlemechs.

RVN-3L Raven

Unfortunately, my personal Dire Wolf is still painted in spring pastels after yesterday. This was great camouflage at the time (I managed to get all the eggs hidden), but they've chosen Antarctica as their battlefield and I don't think it'll help much there.

Antarctica - Gerlache strait

Does anyone have like 50 litres of arctic blue paint they can send before next Friday? Failing that, does anyone have a 100 tonne assault 'mech they could take down there instead? I haven't found any penguins willing to take over for me.

Claire and Taryn do not advocate using battlemechs to resolve issues with other people. If they did, though, and if you were going to do so in Antarctica, they'd recommend that you swap out your heatsinks for extended range large lasers.
