When Fan Conventions Exclude Deaf people, they fail everyone

How Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon Manage That 'Big Sick' Illness in Real Life
by Ashley Lee, at the Hollywood Reporter

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/big-sick-emilys-illness-is-real-based-a-distressing-true-story-1015698

It’s not ideal to fall in love with someone who’s in a coma, but that’s what happens to Kumail Nanjiani in The Big Sick — and in real life. The Silicon Valley actor co-wrote the romantic dramedy with wife Emily V. Gordon, based on their actual courtship (Zoe Kazan portrays her onscreen, and Holly Hunter and Ray Romano play her parents).

The titular sickness remains unnamed throughout most of the movie, as it was to Gordon for much of her life.

As mentioned in some of our updates from earlier this year, we've updated the Fanlore main page! We hope this version helps new users find help and other relevant info more easily. The design change is still very much open to suggestions — if you have ideas, please add a comment to the talk page or contact us via email.

We're still working on three sections we'd like to add to the new main page. First, a 'help wanted' section will link a few stubs that need work and rotate regularly. Next, 'featured article' and 'featured image' sections, which will spotlight each week one article that editors deem thorough and helpful enough and one image with interesting description and source information.

Here's the process we're considering for the nomination and election of featured articles and images. Please let us know what you think via talk page comment or email!

It's time for another question thread!

The rules:

- You may ask any dev-related question you have in a comment. (It doesn't even need to be about Dreamwidth, although if it involves a language/library/framework/database Dreamwidth doesn't use, you will probably get answers pointing that out and suggesting a better place to ask.)
- You may also answer any question, using the guidelines given in To Answer, Or Not To Answer and in this comment thread.

“The coalescence of femslash as a metafandom unto itself may have paradoxically contributed to a bird's-eye view of its marginality. As we might glean from the primacy of slash as the unmarked term (denoting same-sex couples in general and male-male couples in particular), F/F remains underrepresented not only in scholarly research but also arguably in fandom overall (compared to M/M and also to het [heterosexual] and gen [nonsexual] fiction and art).

Femslash fans often frame their experience in this way, as was the case at the "Where's the F/F?" panel at the May 2015 WisCon feminist science fiction convention in Madison, Wisconsin. The conversation took as a jumping-off point detailed statistics, compiled by destinationtoast, on fan fiction posted at Archive of Our Own.”

I just thought this might be of interest to some - there was an amendment passed in Australia earlier today and the Australian Copyright Council has already put up a info sheet about it.

Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and Other Measures) Bill 2017

Summary: Amends the
Copyright Act 1968
to: replace the exception for persons with a disability and others acting on their behalf with a fair dealing exception; replace the current statutory licences for institutions assisting persons with a print or intellectual disability with a single exception; harmonise and modernise the preservation exceptions for copyright material in libraries, archives and key cultural institutions; consolidate and simplify the statutory licences that allow educational institutions to use works and broadcasts; allow copyright material to be incorporated into educational assessments conducted online; set new standard terms of protection for published and unpublished materials and for Crown copyright in original materials; and update references to ministers and preconditions for making regulations extending or restricting the operation of the Act in relation to foreign countries.

Copyright Amendment (Disability and Other Measures) Act 2017
Passed At Last

Following introduction to Parliament in late March, and debate in May, the Senate has today finally passed the Copyright Amendment Disability & Other Measures Act 2017. The Act streamlines the copyright regime for people with a disability, educational institutions and libraries. The reform was made possible by constructive collaboration between copyright stakeholders as s Senator Fifield acknowledged.

“The Government thanks all those who worked collaboratively to provide constructive feedback on the measures contained in this important legislation.”

We have published an information sheet on the Act and will be updating our materials accordingly.

Our new education titles will cover the amendments in detail

We will also be addressing the amendments in our national seminar series

The Act is accessible here

Hi, everyone. I've been meaning to ask this question for years: a long time ago [personal profile] foxfirefey gave me some code to have a "back to top" link with because Transmogrified didn't have one. Later on, she modified the code because it kept moving around on page re-sizing. Her mod solved that problem but possibly begat another: the jumplink doesn't clear short entries/pages with little content.

While this doesn't normally affect .page-tag, .page-icon, .page-archive, .page-recent, .page-read, or .page-network (but it could; the content on those views just happens to be long enough to clear the jumplink) it affects some .page-month views and short entries, reply views with short comments being replied to, reply views where the post and comment form combined won't clear the jumplink, and so on.

Here's an example of the problem in viewable action, seen in the month view.

In playing with the live HTML editor in Firefox the other night I realized I can make the jumplink clear - and stay in place - even with little page content present only if I put it in a pretty weird part of the HTML; it looks like I'd have to take it out of $this->print_body(); and move it to $this->print_module_section("two"); right before the <div style="clear:both"> that's there to clear the footer.

This is a screencap of where the jumplink would need to go, according to live HTML editing: https://marahmarie.dreamwidth.org/file/72191.png

My s2 layer is public and viewable here: my s2 layer.

That said, if anyone can think of a better spot for it in the s2, I'm open to any and all ideas! Fwiw, I've tried CSSing it into clearing but so far, without any luck.

I can't write original s2 nor modify s2 like this (only the simplest snippets of it; this unfortunately didn't qualify) so I'm curious if anyone knows how to move the jumplink without breaking other things (which I actually did three times before giving up the other night in live code: every time I went into our compiler and tried to move it where the HTML live editor seems to think it should go, my sidebar wound up resting in my content body, while my content got pushed clear off the top of the page, so whatever I was trying to do to get this right was not working).

Any help is gladly appreciated!

Fran Wilde is a contributor to Invisible 3, Jim Hines & MaryAnne Mohanraj's collection about representation in SF. She's posted a lovely essay on Jim's Dreamwidth

begin quote
It turns out that what I wanted wasn’t the story of a young woman coming to terms with her brace or her body (seriously it’s a fine story, but it didn’t fit me at all—or, rather, it fit me like a brace, constraining and awkward). What I wanted was something to love. I was listening for that familiar thunk on the hull; I just didn’t know it. That recognition that there was a mind inside a cage of muscle, bone, pain, fiberglass, and metal. The acknowledgement that a mind could do things—heroic things! Cool things!—even if the body rebelled.

Hello all. I have not yet tested this out but am planning to do so later this week. But there is now a client that can be used with Second Life, which is accessible for users of screen readers. Actually this client has been around for several years, but the original developer passed away and the new one has updated the client. I can't wait to get started with Second Life. Check out this great article: http://onj.me/2xxc- . Last I checked which was just this past weekend, the latest Mac version of Radegast hadn't been posted to the new site but that may have changed by the time you read this.
