I'm starting to see game consoles, e-readers, and even franchises like Pathfinder and Warhammer 40,000 differently. They all have built-in stores, in a sense, but they also want to be your whole lifestyle, or even your religion.

Money, consumerism, anxiety, and abandonment )

In my old church, people liked to wax poetic about how God's love is indescribable, to the point where it's like describing the taste of salt to someone who can't taste it.

During a recent stream of Fate/EXTELLA, a musou action game + extremely gay visual novel I've been streaming, one of our viewers pointed out that something a love interest did was abusive.

We acknowledged this as soon as we saw the comment, and once we were done with that scene we paused the game to discuss it with the chat. The goal wasn't to make excuses for the game and the character, but to validate the concerns that this viewer raised, and to acknowledge that yes, this was problematic.

We've watched streams before where everyone seemed to be okay with something that triggered or unnerved us, and it's a really bad feeling. We may lose some (hypothetical) viewers from having these discussions, but I like to think that the ones who are invested enough in our streams to let us know when they're uncomfortable are worth keeping.

Click here if you can't see the Fate/EXTELLA trailer.

If that interests you at all, you can subscribe to our stream here, or view our Fate/EXTELLA series from the beginning. Our next stream will be tomorrow, Monday April 17, at 9 PM EDT, and will last about an hour and a half. We're happy to answer questions and explain context behind what's going on.

At some point, my parents of origin decided that they were okay with only one child.

It wasn't me.

So, our actual gender doesn't match our birth gender. Sometimes we talk about it. Sometimes we get put through hell for it, or have to deal with people who wilfully misunderstand a thing we explain very clearly. ^^; But mostly it's been okay!

That's from the comic "Your Black Friend," which Homeworld / Sword of the Stars writer Arinn Dembo reviews on her blog.

I'm reblogging this quote for truth. When I started becoming aware of systemic injustice is when I started being held at even more of a distance. My family and church didn't know what to do with me, and could only tell me to "stop reading those things." Individual people would come up and thank me, sometimes, after I spoke up on others' behalf in Institute, or tried to make sure that someone was okay. But to anyone who had any kind of power or privilege in White Mormon culture, I vanished except as an annoyance.

On the plus side, most White Mormon people are kind of boring anyway, except when their scandals show up in the newspaper. Being around other trans women and "woke" friends has been very good for me.

(About the word "woke:" Arinn notes that it has been appropriated by white people to mean "sensitive and aware," when it was originally used by black people to mean "alert to potential danger." She discusses the need for such a term, in a society that's even more hostile to people with black skin than it is to me personally.)

Be sure to turn off all the lights from 8:30 to 9:30 PM in your time zone, today, unless doing so would be unsafe.

Also, feel free to tune in or subscribe to our Twitch channel! We'll be streaming at 8 PM Central. It's a little bare-bones right now, but we're archiving our Fate/EXTRA streams under "Videos" and our viewers usually get lively discussions and character speculation going.

Did you know our entire streaming setup (a fanless laptop, a capture card, and a PSTV) uses barely any power? We're doing our part to save energy ~

EDIT: Turns out we're actually getting started closer to 8:45 PM Central. Whoops! Don't forget to turn out the lights ~

We're okay with getting fewer things, if the ones that we have make us feel better about ourself and our place in the world. And we're okay with Alias buying us electronics, or with saving up for expensive devices, if they last us a long time and delight us the entire way.
