Kelpies are written into books as seductive equine shapeshifters; in actuality they're spooky, flighty herd creatures who can take human form, but rarely bother unless someone brings enough (non-metaphorical) sugar.

Selkies are portrayed as sad woobies with magic that doesn't quite belong to them (h/t Seanan McGuire). They're actually strongly heirarchical social creatures with elaborate patterns of movement and ritual.

Swan Maidens are portrayed as beautiful, mystical, and alluring oracles of wisdom. They're generally just big aggro geese substantially more aggressive and in-the-moment than their fictional counterparts.
